Our client, a well-established manufacturing business in the Scottish Borders, is looking to add a Control & Instrumentation Technician to their engineering and maintenance team. This is a technically focused role, working on plant-wide control, automation, and instrumentation systems that are critical to safe, reliable production.
You’ll be hands-on with fault diagnosis, system optimisation, and modification of live control systems, supporting both day-to-day operations and longer-term continuous improvement projects. Working closely with the Electrical and C&I function, you’ll play a key role in maintaining and developing control strategies that drive plant performance.
Engineering focus of the role
- Diagnose, maintain, and modify PLC, DCS, and SCADA systems across the site
- Support and improve control philosophies, interlocks, and safety-related functions
- Carry out instrumentation fault-finding, calibration, loop checks, and commissioning
- Implement control system changes in line with MOC, safety, and documentation standards
- Contribute to Advanced Process Control (APC) and process optimisation initiatives
- Support asset management, spares strategy, and planned maintenance activities
- Work collaboratively with electrical, mechanical, and process engineering teams
- Provide technical input during shutdowns, upgrades, and improvement projects
What we’re looking for
- Recognised apprenticeship or equivalent qualification in Electrical, Control, or Instrumentation Engineering
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in a control & instrumentation role within paper, process manufacturing, or a similar industrial environment
- Strong working knowledge of PLC, DCS, and SCADA systems (experience with Siemens PCS7 highly advantageous)
- Understanding of APC, asset management systems, and maintenance planning
- Solid knowledge of instrumentation principles, including pressure, flow, temperature, and analytical measurement
- Strong awareness of Electrical Safety and Control System Standards, including Electricity at Work Regulations
- Methodical approach to fault diagnosis, root cause analysis, and technical documentation
- Confident communicator who can support, coach, and work effectively within a multi-disciplinary engineering team
